Professor John Burland CBE FREng FRS

John Burland is Emeritus Professor of Soil Mechnaics and Senior Research Investigator at Imperial College London. In addition to being very active in teaching and research he has been involved in the design of many large ground engineering projects and was a member of the Italian Prime Minister’s Commission for stabilising the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

John Burland is passionate about communicating the excitement and challenge of engineering and in 2006 was awarded the Public Promotion of Engineering Medal of The Royal Academy of Engineering.
