After four years as a Lucas graduate apprentice and research scholar, Dr Nussey joined IBM as a trainee systems engineer. He spent the next 53 years with the company, including 17 years leading a group turning good ideas into marketable software, and 35 years creating and leading IBM UK's pre-university employment programme. He also chaired the IBM UK Technical Consultancy Group for seven years, served as the IBM Academy of Technology's EMEA vice-president and latterly worked part time on university and external relations. Dr Nussey retired from IBM in June 2016.
Past Royal Academy of Engineering service includes eight years on Council, chairing the Academy and Royal Society's Science and Engineering Policy Studies Unit and serving as inaugural chair of the Proactive Membership Committee. He is currently a member of the Ingenia Editorial Board and Visiting Professor Management Group. Elsewhere he is a member of the EPSRC College of Peers and of the Institution of Engineering and Technology Awards and Prestige Lecture committees, an Honorary Professor at the University of Cardiff, and a Young Engineers and Imagineering Foundation trustee.
